After an extensive reverse engineering effort by several MAME developers, MAME became the first emulator to support many retro handheld electronic games. Their large lineup of handheld LCD games spanned from generic themed games, to games featuring characters from well known franchises such as MC Hammer, Beverly Hills 90210, or Sonic the Hedgehog.ĭespite their simplicity, these games were completely unemulated for a very long time due to a lack of information about their hardware and difficulties with dumping ROMs and accurately recreating graphics.
